Christmas '16

This week ended with Christmas day and we have a whole bunch of pictures from the week. We had the family over, which is our tradition.
And when the family comes over for a holiday, we pull out the bone. With this ham, we mean that literally.

We had a few frills and dressings with the ham.

Boiled Custard Time

As we approach Christmas, we have been gearing up for the usual suspects on the table. Fruitcake, pie and boiled custard. First off, we made a gallon of boiled custard.

And we made a couple of fruitcakes. One without nuts for brother Kevin, one for our snacking. Orders have started rolling in for next week, so it looks like we will be busy beavers next week.
And last week we shared our peppermint patties. We snapped a picture of the finished product after we published last week.
A couple of other things going on this past week, we made another batch of laundry detergent.
We put our celery start in a pot of dirt
We made a meal of paprika chicken for dinner
And this week instead of linguini, we put the gravy over mashed potatoes
We smoked a brisket, and while we had the fire going we got a brainstorm to put the trap boiling pot on the firebox, killing two birds with one stone. We tried to think of a way to show the trap line, but when you do it right, all the pictures show is dirt. Pictures of caught critters would probably enrage the foo foo crowd. We will work on trap pictures.
It was all of nine degrees outside when we smoked the brisket, so standing over a hot smoker was a good idea. We got a mess of collards from the garden. They were froze solid, but we just broke them off the stalk and cooked them like normal.
And the girls have picked up the egg production. We managed to put ten dozen eggs out for sale this week, and we still have enough for boiled custard and all the baking we're doing. The Marans have started giving us about six eggs per day, we love the color of their eggs.
We ended the week with wings.
